Pregnancy and the postnatal period offer key opportunities for contraception counselling and provision, yet access remains inconsistent globally. There is increasing recognition of the unmet need for postpartum contraception (PPC) and the importance of equitable, person-centred approaches to support informed decision-making and optimise pregnancy planning.
Here we describe the formation and priorities of the international Postpartum Contraception Network (the “Network”), established in Australia in mid-2025 with a vision that all women, pregnant people, people who have given birth, and partners have access to contraception information and services to support informed decision-making, pregnancy planning and preparation, and healthy birth spacing. The Network represents a collaborative effort to advance evidence-informed PPC care, a historically underserved area of reproductive healthcare, through a shared agenda shaped by professional and consumer perspectives.
