Lessons from the journey: Navigating career, leadership, and advocacy in behavior analysis.

Behavior Analysis: Research and Practice, Vol 26(2), May 2026, 58-63; doi:10.1037/bar0000334

This article explores my professional journey in behavior analysis, offering a detailed account of my career, leadership, and advocacy. I reflect on the pivotal decision to transition from a practitioner-focused role to an academic and research-oriented career, a shift motivated by a desire to influence the next generation of behavior analysts and contribute impactful, meaningful research to the field. I discuss my efforts to establish a new applied behavior analysis program at Pepperdine University and highlight the lessons learned from this challenging but rewarding experience. The article further delves into a variety of professional and personal growth areas, including the importance of mentorship, effective collaboration, and navigating professional burnout. I also share insights on understanding one’s core values and the ongoing challenge of finding a sustainable work–life balance. By examining my journey, I aim to provide fellow professionals with a resource for navigating their own career paths, fostering a strong professional identity, and making a lasting impact on the field beyond clinical practice.
