More than the work: Reflections on building a sustainable career in behavior analysis.

Behavior Analysis: Research and Practice, Vol 26(1), Feb 2026, 39-46; doi:10.1037/bar0000318

When I first entered behavior analysis, I could not have imagined how the field and my relationship to it would evolve over time. This article is both a reflection and a summary of lessons learned through moments of missteps, recalibration, leadership, and growth. I explore how private verbal behavior can shape experience, how discomfort can serve as a teacher, and how we can move forward even when imposter syndrome arises. I share thoughts on the myth of work–life balance, the importance of career seasons, and the value of acting strategically rather than reactively. Although I was invited to write as a woman in behavior analysis, my hope is that these reflections resonate across identities and roles. If you are at the start of your journey, I hope this article helps you feel a little more seen and a little less alone. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2026 APA, all rights reserved)
