ABSTRACT
Dr Paul Gibney, a highly respected and experienced psychotherapist and family therapist based in Brisbane, Australia, boasts a career of nearly 50 years. His work uniquely integrates systemic and Jungian thought, stemming from his original training in Gestalt and psychoanalytic therapy. This distinctive approach is applied in his practice with individuals, couples and families, as well as in his popular training seminars and workshops. Paul has contributed extensively to therapeutic literature, focusing on pragmatic practice. His writings cover developing practice frameworks, applying systemic concepts and exploring ideas such as levels of change, time and context in family work. His thinking and practice effectively bridge classical and contemporary theories, offering a comprehensive understanding of family function and dysfunction from both individual and systems perspectives. This paper documents a virtual discussion held in December 2025. It delves into Paul’s significant experience in family therapy, exploring his ideas on practice frameworks, creativity in practice and his unique synthesis of psychoanalytic and systemic approaches. The discussion aims to inspire further creative thinking and the blending of therapeutic styles—what Paul describes as a ‘second practice of psychotherapy’.
