Examining family-level risks for Asian American youth during COVID-19.

Asian American Journal of Psychology, Vol 17(2), Jun 2026, 133-145; doi:10.1037/aap0000398

The COVID-19 pandemic adversely impacted familial stress for parents (Wu & Xu, 2020) with distress associated with the pandemic disproportionately affecting Asian American (AA) mental health (Huang & Tsai, 2023). This study examined the direct and indirect effects of four different types of risk factors (i.e., practical, physical, emotional, and family problems) on AA parent mental health (i.e., anxiety and depression symptoms) and child outcomes 3 months later (i.e., internalizing and externalizing behaviors) among a sample of 172 AA families. Results indicated that all four risk factors were associated with parental anxiety and depression symptoms. Parental anxiety was associated with child externalizing behaviors 3 months later and physical risk factors predicted child externalizing behaviors 3 months later. Additionally, all four risk factors were indirectly associated with child externalizing 3 months later through parental anxiety. The results emphasize the need for further research and clinical interventions aimed at family-level risk factors and their implications for AA parent mental health and child behavioral outcomes.
