Disentangling Maternal-Child Depression Dynamics Across Early Adolescence

To the Editor Hewitt et al present a longitudinal bidirectional analysis examining associations between maternal and child depression from middle childhood through emerging adolescence. Their findings challenge the prevailing assumption that maternal depression primarily precedes child depression, instead demonstrating that perhaps depressive symptoms from children may influence maternal depression. Clarifying such directional associations is important for advancing and developing future family-centered care models in pediatric psychiatry.
