Management of asymptomatic bacterial STIs and doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis: consensus statement of the Italian Society of Infectious and Tropical Diseases

Key messages

The Italian Society of Infectious and Tropical Diseases suggests:

  • Tailored counselling and screening of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), guided by sexual history and anatomical exposure, for people attending HIV or sexual health services.

  • Annual screening of chlamydia and gonorrhoea for sexually active people aged <25 years and key populations, and annual screening of syphilis for sexually active people who had more than one partner or bi-annual screening for people with higher likelihood of exposure.

  • Offering testing to asymptomatic partners of people diagnosed with an STI, and treatment if results are positive.

  • Offering epidemiological treatment or retesting to asymptomatic partners who tested within the window period.

  • Providing counselling on doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis (doxyPEP) to people with higher likelihood of STI exposure, and doxyPEP prescription following shared decision-making.
