Yemen: Maternal and Newborn Health Services (RH) Annual Report 2025

Country: Yemen
Source: Deem for Development Organization

Please refer to the attached file.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Yemen continues to face one of the world’s most protracted and complex humanitarian crises. More than nine years of conflict and instability, compounded by economic collapse, persistent funding gaps, and the residual impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, have severely affected the population’s access to essential services. Women and girls are disproportionately impacted, particularly in relation to reproductive, maternal, and newborn health outcomes. Yemen has one of the highest maternal mortality ratios in the Arab States region, reflecting limited access to quality emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC), especially in conflict-affected and underserved areas. UNFPA leads the maternal and newborn health (RH) response in Yemen, providing life-saving maternal and newborn health (RH) services, emergency obstetric and newborn care, and essential reproductive health supplies through supported health facilities nationwide. UNFPA remains the sole provider of life-saving maternal and newborn health (RH) medicines in the country. The Maternal and Newborn Health Services (RH) project is a core component of the humanitarian health response, aiming to address unmet reproductive health needs and ensure access to quality maternal, newborn, and family planning services. The project prioritizes conflict-affected, hard-to-reach, and underserved populations, with a focus on safe motherhood, prevention of maternal and newborn complications, and reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality. Strengthening the readiness and functionality of health facilities to deliver Basic and Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC and CEmONC) services remains a key strategic approach to improving maternal and newborn survival.
