This fact sheet explains the general principles of EU social and employment policy. It highlights the key milestones and developments that have strengthened social protections in the EU and contributed to European integration. An important milestone came in 2017, when Parliament, the Council and the Commission proclaimed the European Pillar of Social Rights and reaffirmed their commitment to improving living and working conditions throughout the EU. The 2021 European Pillar of Social Rights Action Plan, which is due for update in 2026, outlines concrete measures to translate these commitments into tangible progress.
