Is academe discriminating against white men?

A viral article has everyone talking, and arguing…. Both X and Bluesky erupted with (divergent) discourse. On X, many professors and observers of academe concluded that Savage was mostly correct. Some even argued that he was not critical enough toward a system that, in their view, produced an era of rampant, sometimes-flagrant discrimination. On Bluesky, Savage’s article was widely dismissed as a terminal case of sour grapes. Commenters argued that young white men are not owed prestige careers, that this is what it looks like to correct historical injustices, and that Savage failed to account for larger economic and social forces that contributed to the cratering of the academic-job market for everyone.
