Cuts to Education Department grants will cost students opportunities, educators and former employees say

Nationwide, more than 568,000 low-income students were enrolled in the GEAR UP program in the 2022-23 school year, according to the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships. But under the administration’s 2026 proposed budget for the Department of Education, this program would be eliminated.
