Advancing a trauma-informed approach to leadership in the workplace: A conceptual review and theoretical extension.

Psychology of Leaders and Leadership, Vol 28(2), Nov 2025, 131-156; doi:10.1037/mgr0000172

Contemporary organizations face complex challenges; these challenges have significant implications for the work-related experiences of leaders and employees. We propose a trauma-informed approach to leadership is vital to ameliorating the negative impact difficult, even traumatic experiences have on employee well-being and performance. In particular, we contend that trauma-informed leadership (TIL) is central to creating a greater sense of perceived organizational support and collective well-being, therein promoting a safer and healthier work environment. This article highlights the meaning of TIL while examining its potential benefits and applications to workplaces. Ultimately, we present a multilevel framework that synthesizes potential drivers, outcomes, and boundary conditions of TIL. Building on this framework, we propose ways organizations can leverage TIL to alleviate suffering. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)
