The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the experiences of 11 clients with chronic pain who participated in a 10-week, small group psychotherapy intervention that integrated emotional awareness and expression therapy and mindfulness. Qualitative interviews using constructivist grounded theory were conducted with participants to understand their experiences. The findings identify a set of conditions under which the approach is perceived as effective in alleviating chronic pain, as well as conditions under which participants perceived moderate or no benefit from the intervention. These findings provide the potential to inform future treatment protocols and interventions. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
