This is the first annual report released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services since the entire team of scientists in charge of the survey was fired this year by the administration.

Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson’s 2025 bestseller, Abundance, kicks off with sharp critiques of Jimmy Carter’s anti-statist declaration that “government cannot solve our problems” and Bill Clinton’s announcement that “the era of Big Government is over.” It concludes with a rousing endorsement of Karl Marx’s famous “fettering” thesis — the idea that capitalism eventually stifles the very productive forces it once unleashed. In spite of these anti-neoliberal flourishes, it has received a surprisingly cool response from some sections of the Left.

Jenalea Randall, director of public and government affairs at the Kansas Department for Children and Families, said the state is now reviewing cases on a statewide basis rather than having each regional office carry every case from that area. Spreading out the workload has cleaned up the error rate and reduced wait times, the state said.

The service is now deemed to be good overall with a robust focus on creating the conditions for success and the pace of improvement has accelerated over the last two years.
