Lollipop: women have alchemy and agency in this council estate drama that’s the antithesis of poverty porn

The Conversation | The Garden Cinema
The Conversation | The Garden Cinema

Lollipop is a BBC Films-funded feature drama which tells the story of Molly (Posy Sterling), recently out of a prison after serving a four-month sentence. She comes out to find she has lost her council housing and custody of her kids. Molly finds herself in the mother of all catch-22s: she can’t get housing because she doesn’t have her kids living with her, but she can’t get them back without a roof over her head.

RFK Jr.’s attack on vaccine experts endangers every American

STAT | A Rice/AP
STAT | A Rice/AP

In my three decades as a practicing pediatrician, I worked at community clinics across the country. The children in my care came from all walks of life — some with private insurance, others covered under Medicaid, and many with no coverage at all. But every child, regardless of circumstance, deserved the same thing: the best protection possible against deadly, preventable diseases. That meant ensuring they were vaccinated fully and on time.

A field guide to ‘accelerationism’: White supremacist groups using violence to spur race war and create social chaos

The Conversation | S Helber/AP
The Conversation | S Helber/AP

In my research on right-wing extremism over 30 years, a disturbing pattern has emerged: White supremacists and white nationalists are increasingly willing to use violence targeting critical infrastructure in an effort to destabilize society…. In the past several years, extremists have started using the term “accelerationism” to describe their desire to create social chaos and societal collapse that leads to a race war and the destruction of liberal democratic systems, paving the way for a white ethnostate.
