Improving adherence to STI screening standards at long-acting reversible contraception appointments: impact of clinical audit over 24 months

In this study, we evaluated the offer of sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening tests at appointments for fitting and removal of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) in relation to the UK Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH) auditable outcomes. The FSRH indicates a standard of 97% for ‘The proportion of sexually active women requesting LARC who are offered sexually transmitted infection screening’.1 LARC methods include both intrauterine and subdermal implant contraception.

The initial audit assessed attendances for LARC during the 6-month period from 1 January to 30 June 2021 using the Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare Activity Dataset. Both clinical case notes and any Genitourinary Medicine Clinical Activity Dataset coding applied were reviewed.

A total of 879 patients who had attended at least once for LARC were identified. There was evidence of STI screening offer in 164 (18.7%); 77/164 (47.0%) accepted at least one STI test. The initial results were presented…
