Undergraduate midwifery contraception training in England and Wales

The Faculty of Sexual & Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH) and the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (RCOG) recommend that post-birth contraception is offered to everyone giving birth before they leave maternity services.1 2 This improves equity of access to contraception,3 is acceptable to women4, has been implemented in sites across the UK, and reduces unplanned pregnancy against the backdrop of rising abortions in the UK.5

As not everyone sees an obstetrician during their maternity care, all midwives need knowledge of contraception after birth and confidence in delivering counselling and contraception.

Initial local audit showed that 51% of women leaving maternity services had not considered contraception, indicating that the current provision of contraception counselling in maternity could be improved.
