E.K. looks out on a field where she sometimes takes her children to collect masu, a small yam-like root also known as “alpine sweetvetch” or “mousefood.” She wears her grandmother’s 50-year-old parka, made from wolverine, wolf, squirrel, sea otter and calfskin. E.K. says the wolverine is a symbol of strength.
