In her scholarship, Ruth Wilson Gilmore has rigorously exposed the political and economic forces that have led to the incarceration of over 2 million people in the United States. In her organizing, Gilmore, along with many other activists, has forcefully challenged huge increases in prison construction, the vast expansion of domestic police forces, and the common sense that treats these violent institutions as catch-all solutions to social problems.
