This commentary explores the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare’s (AASWSW) call to action, the 13 Grand Challenges for Social Work (GCSW), and the role that Black women will have in leading the GCSW initiative. From the historic courage of Ruby Bridges to social work leaders such as Dr. Dorothy I. Height, and U.S. Congresswomen Barbara Lee and Karen Bass, Black women social workers have made groundbreaking strides and contributed to the well-being of society. Despite their many contributions, racism, sexism, and class prejudice remain critical factors in thwarting upward mobility and propagating occupational segregation in many professional sectors. Within social work education, the dynamics of intersecting forms of oppression have also resulted in the underrepresentation of Black women leaders (Banks et al., 2018).
