Ofcom report on internet safety measures: strategies of parental protection for children online

Summary: First of three reports published in response to a request from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport following Government requests to UK Internet Service Providers regarding internet safety. Reports on the strategies and tools used by parents to manage children’s use of the internet. Looks at: safety mechanisms and the role of the industry; safety measures on sites regularly used by children; and why parents choose not to apply parental controls. Identifies three parental approaches to mediating children’s internet use: regularly talking to children about online safety; rules relating to parental supervision; and mediation through technical tools.
