A patient can be admitted to the hospital with more than one
medical condition. The principal diagnosis is the condition
primarily responsible for the patient’s admission. Hospitals need
to know the most common principal diagnoses so that they can
appropriately plan for and provide the resources required to treat
patients with these more frequent conditions.
