‘You Became Someone’ Social Hierarchies in Girls’ Communities at Riding Stables

The riding stable has become an important social sphere for girls in the Nordic countries. In this article I concentrate on the hierarchy and the use of social power in girls’ communities at Finnish horseback riding stables. I also contemplate how horses and taking care of them are intertwined in girls’ social practices. I illustrate how they affect the construction of girl’s agency and the communal agency as a whole and the positions that girls hold and produce in the hierarchy. This article discusses in which different ways girls construct their intimate hierarchies in these unique communities.
