Doctor–parent communication

I am currently a research fellow, beginning my career in health services and outcomes research. My primary interest is in provider–patient communication in the emergency department and its influence on outcomes. While I have always had an interest in teaching and educating patients in plain language, the catalyst for embarking on a research career occurred near the end of my clinical training in emergency medicine. This event touched me personally and challenged my notions of patient education and what comprises “good communication.”
