The link between Indigenous culture and wellbeing: qualitative evidence for Australian Aboriginal peoples 2012

This paper explores the role of culture in identity, wellbeing, and child development for Indigenous Australians. Using data from ‘Footprints in Time, the Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children’ (LSIC), it discusses parent answers to the survey questions: ‘What is it about Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander culture that will help your child to grow up strong?’ and ‘Apart from health and happiness, what do you want for your child?’ The paper also briefly discusses the literature on the relationship of culture to self-identity, resilience, sense of community, and outcomes for Indigenous people.
