Facing the Urban Challenge: Reimagining Land Use in America’s Distressed Older Cities

In order to remake America’s distressed older cities as stronger entities, Alan Mallach writes that the federal government needs to rethink and partner with these cities as they come to grips with urban population loss. To be effective, the federal government needs to focus on building key physical, economic, and institutional assets; preserving viable neighborhoods and housing; and identifying new and green uses for vacant lands and buildings, says Mallach.
